Airing Differences | Breaking Silences | Listening with Insomnia
The project REGARDING PAIN | Radio RTPO emerged from students of our studio as a contribution to the Academy of Fine Arts’ annual Rundgang in January 2025. Students transformed the teaching pavilion on Semperdepot’s first floor into a temporary radio station, producing and broadcasting a six-hour live show throughout the building and beyond. Responding to our term‘s theme ‘On Violence,’ this project used Susan Sontag’s seminal text “Regarding the Pain of Others” as a framework to examine how media mediates our perception of others’ suffering. This exploration aimed to create a counterpoint to our image-saturated culture by prioritizing sonic experience over visual consumption.
Building on this foundation, our upcoming term will delve into both historical and contemporary radio cultures, exploring the tensions and connections between analog and digital forms, between the past and present of radio. In an era dominated by visual media, we deliberately shift our focus—closing our eyes while perking up our ears. This reorientation invites us to engage with the complex dimensions of sonic experience: we shift our attention to speaking and listening, to stuttering and sensing, to recordings and erasures, to sonic evidences, to silences, interruptions and continuities, and we will examine the physical and metaphorical aspects of transmissions—waves, signals, patterns, and disruptions. This exploration connects to radio’s rich cultural history while acknowledging its continued relevance in our digital landscape.
Radio cultures have historically served as vital channels for artistic experimentation, political resistance, and (feminist) community building. From the early avant-garde radio plays of the 1920s to pirate radio stations challenging state control, from community radio initiatives amplifying marginalized voices to contemporary podcasting revolutionizing media distribution, radio has consistently evolved while maintaining its intimate connection to the human voice and ear. By engaging with radio as both medium and metaphor, we will question how sonic transmissions shape our understanding of distance and proximity, presence and absence, isolation and connection—themes that resonate deeply in this increasingly virtual world.
In this context, we will partner with Marietta Kesting, a scholar in media, art, and cultural studies currently conducting research for the FWF project Don’t Wake Up! Future Dreaming in the Arts: At the Intersection of Aesthetics, Decolonization and Technology at the Musik- und Kunstprivatuniversität der Stadt Wien. Marietta also researches at the Institute for Cultural Inquiry (ICI) in Berlin and teaches at Potsdam University’s Institute of Arts and Media. Together, we will host a two-day seminar with Anabelle Lacroix—curator, writer, researcher, and founder of the experimental radio project RADIO INSOMNIA—who was invited to Vienna by Marietta Kesting. RADIO INSOMNIA is an all-night broadcast serving night communities, exploring the political and poetic dimensions of nighttime wakefulness while questioning: What possibilities emerge from listening at night when wakefulness is embraced rather than merely endured? Additionally, Marietta will join us twice for focused introductory reading sessions connected to our shared interest in radio. The reading sessions will take place April 9th and May7th. The seminar with Anabelle Lacroix will be held on May 28th and May 29th.

Das Projekt REGARDING PAIN | Radio RTPO entstand als Beitrag der Studierenden unseres Studios zum jährlichen Rundgang der Akademie der bildenden Künste im Januar 2025. Die Studierenden verwandelten den Lehrpavillon im ersten Stock des Semperdepots in eine temporäre Radiostation und produzierten und sendeten eine sechsstündige Live-Sendung im ganzen Gebäude und darüber hinaus. In Anlehnung an das Semesterthema „On Violence“ wurde in diesem Projekt Susan Sontags Text „Regarding the Pain of Others“ zum Ausgangspunkt genommen um zu untersuchen, wie die Medien unsere Wahrnehmung des Leidens der Anderen vermitteln. Im Sinne dieses Zugangs, soll ein Kontrapunkt zu unserer bildgesättigten Kultur gesetzt werden, indem die akustische Erfahrung der visuellen Ebenevorgezogen wird.
Darauf aufbauend werden wir uns im kommenden Sommersemester sowohl mit historischen als auch zeitgenössischen Radiokulturen befassen und die Spannungen und Verbindungen zwischen analogen und digitalen Formen sowie zwischen Vergangenheit und Gegenwart des Radios untersuchen. In einer Zeit, die von visuellen Medien dominiert wird, verlagern wir bewusst unseren Fokus – wir schließen unsere Augen und spitzen unsere Ohren. Diese Neuorientierung lädt uns ein, uns mit den komplexen Dimensionen der Klangerfahrung auseinanderzusetzen: Wir verlagern unsere Aufmerksamkeit auf das Sprechen und Hören, auf das Stottern und Fühlen, auf Aufnahmen und Auslöschungen, auf klangliche Zeugnisse, auf Stille, Unterbrechungen und Kontinuitäten, und wir werden die physischen und metaphorischen Aspekte von Übertragungen untersuchen – Wellen, Signale, Muster und Störungen.
Diese Erkundung knüpft an die reiche Kulturgeschichte des Radios an und erkennt gleichzeitig seine anhaltende Relevanz in unserer digitalen Landschaft an.
Radiokulturen haben in der Vergangenheit als wichtige Kanäle für künstlerische Experimente, politischen Widerstand und (feministische) Gemeinschaftsbildung gedient. Von den frühen Avantgarde-Hörspielen der 1920er Jahre bis hin zu Piratensendern, die die staatliche Kontrolle herausforderten, von Community-Radio-Initiativen, die marginalisierten Stimmen Gehör verschafften, bis hin zum zeitgenössischen Podcasting, das die Medienverbreitung revolutioniert, hat sich das Radio ständig weiterentwickelt und dabei seine enge Verbindung zur menschlichen Stimme und zum Ohr bewahrt. Indem wir uns mit dem Radio als Medium und Metapher auseinandersetzen, werden wir hinterfragen, wie akustische Übertragungen unser Verständnis von Distanz und Nähe, Anwesenheit und Abwesenheit, Isolation und Verbindung prägen – Themen, die in unserer zunehmend virtuellen Welt eine große Rolle spielen.
Wir arbeiten im Sommersemester 2025 mit Marietta Kesting zusammen, einer Wissenschaftlerin für Medien-, Kunst- und Kulturwissenschaften, die derzeit für das FWF-Projekt Don’t Wake Up! Future Dreaming in the Arts: At the Intersection of Aesthetics, Decolonization and Technology an der Musik- und Kunstprivatuniversität der Stadt Wien. Marietta forscht außerdem am Institute for Cultural Inquiry (ICI) in Berlin und lehrt am Institut für Kunst und Medien der Universität Potsdam. Gemeinsam werden wir ein zweitägiges Seminar mit Anabelle Lacroix – Kuratorin, Schriftstellerin, Forscherin und Gründerin des experimentellen Radioprojekts RADIO INSOMNIA – veranstalten, die von Marietta Kesting nach Wien eingeladen wurde. RADIO INSOMNIA ist eine Nachtsendung für Nachtgemeinschaften, die die politischen und poetischen Dimensionen des nächtlichen Wachseins erforscht und dabei die Frage stellt: Welche Möglichkeiten ergeben sich aus dem nächtlichen Zuhören, wenn man die Wachsamkeit nicht nur erträgt, sondern auch annimmt? Darüber hinaus wird Marietta zweimal zu uns kommen, um einführende Lesungen zu veranstalten, die sich auf unser gemeinsames Interesse am Radio beziehen. Die Lesungen finden am 9. April und 7. Mai statt. Das Seminar mit Anabelle Lacroix findet am 28. und 29. Mai statt.
