Working with sound, music, urban environments and people, Brandon LaBelle explores the intersections of the private and the public. This occurs through an overall interest in working contextually and with sensitivity to the cultural narratives that bind geographies and imaginations. From radio memories to dinner habits to speech acts, his work engages how cultural phenomena circulate through daily life. For the presentation LaBelle will share his recent projects and talk through related issues.
Brandon LaBelle is an artist and writer working with sound and related cultural narratives.

This presentation is based on works that have historically made explicit use of the “mimetic faculty” in order to critique, undermine and transform representations and societal regimes of identity from within. The tradition of a critical, subversive mimesis is being interrogated for its potential to address contemporary forms of social power and their relation to aesthetics. As negative mimesis, Mimétisme and subsequent strategies of excessive mimicry are being questioned for their politics of traversing and transgressing borders of established binary oppositions such as nature and culture, individual and environment, or figure and (back-)ground.
Anselm Franke is curator and writer. He is director of Extra City Center for Contemporary Art in Antwerp, Belgium, was a co-curator of Manifesta 7 (Trento) and is a member of the Center for Research Architecture at Goldsmiths College.
